Storage of Crustocean Feeds
Factors that affect Shrimp feed quality
Shrimp feed is a semi-perishable product and it is therefore very important to store the feeds in proper conditions. Shrimp feed quality can be reduced.
due to loss of nutrients, rancidity, growth of micro-organism and infestation.
VDS guarantee the quality of Custocean feeds up to 4 months after the production date
- Loss of Nutrients :
High temperatures and humid atmosphere especially speed up the degradation of vitamins.
For that reason, Crustocean feeds contain an adequate amount of vitamins to compensate those losses. Whenever possible, stabilized forms of vitamins are used.
- Rancidity :
With time, oxygen breaks up fat molecules and these reactions can results in Off flavour, Vitamin E deficiency and poor growth. VDS solved this problem as we only use the highest quality Fish oil and also because we closely collaborate with our Supplier.
Furthermore, rancidity is also prevented as anti-oxidants are added at the source.
- Micro-organism/Fungus :
With a MAXIMUM moisture content of 10%, the use of fresh and high quality raw materials and the inclusion of anti-molds, the risk of Molds growth is greatly reduced with Crustocean feeds. Molds metabolism produce Mycotoxins which are poisons that affect the growth and the survival of shrimps. Storing the feed in a dry and well ventilated place is still considered as the best way to prevent the growth of molds.
- Infestation :
In feed store, Insects and rodents are susceptible to infest shrimp feeds. The best way to reduce this risk is to properly store your feed and to reduce the storing period.
Recommendations for feed storage
- Feed should be stored in a dry, cool and well ventilated such as this feed warehouse design.
- Follow the "first in/first out" stock management principle.
- Prevent feed bags to be in contact with the floor and walls. Stacked feed bags on pallet in order to prevent conditions and in order to enable good air circulation.
